Oakland Raiders News49ers 34, Raiders 20 (AP)For the last three miserable seasons, the Bay Area has been home to two bad NFL teams. At least the San Francisco 49ers can prove they're getting better. Arnaz Battle caught two touchdown passes from Alex Smith, and the 49ers overcame Randy Moss' 100th career TD reception with a strong second half in a 34-20 victory over the winless Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
Raiders cut Foschi, activate Brown from practice squad (AP)The Oakland Raiders waived fullback John Paul Foschi on Saturday and activated linebacker Ricky Brown from the practice squad. Foschi, in his third year with the Raiders, did not play in Oakland's first three games. He played in 10 games last season and spent 2004 on the practice squad. Brown is an undrafted free agent out of Boston College.
Kiss and make up? (Yahoo! Sports)Will T.O. and Donovan McNabb exchange pleasantries or ignore each other before kickoff on Sunday?
Chargers among those on Big Ben's Top 10 list (AP)Turns out David Letterman isn't the only guy with a Top 10 list. Ben Roethlisberger has one, too. Roethlisberger's list isn't as witty or comical as Letterman's -- unless, of course, the slapstick-like offensive play of the winless Oakland Raiders is taken into account. It exists only in his mind, and it includes the 10 teams that passed him over in the 2004 draft.
Philly's revolving door (Yahoo! Sports)The Eagles have some question marks on offense, but should get a key member of its defense back for the Dallas game.
Rising to the top (Yahoo! Sports)After dismantling the Seahawks on Sunday, the undefeated Bears are atop the rankings for the first time.
Hangover cure (SI.com)Seattle coach Mike Holmgren delivered the speech early in training camp, almost as an obligation, and then he...
Raiders struggle to find positives after yet another loss (AP)The players hear the jokes, the talk of a winless season and the cracks that the Oakland Raiders are already on the clock for the first pick in next year's NFL draft. For a franchise that prides itself on mottos like "Just Win Baby" and "Commitment to Excellence," it hasn't been this bad since before Al Davis came to town more than four decades ago.
And then there were three NFL unbeatens -- the Colts, Raven and Bears (AP)Indianapolis and Baltimore needed last-minute scores to keep their unbeaten seasons going. Chicago had a much easier time staying undefeated. Peyton Manning scored from a yard out with 50 seconds left in leading the Colts to a wild 31-28 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday, boosting Indianapolis to 4-0 and putting it two games ahead in the AFC South.
Browns 24, Raiders 21 (AP)Charlie Frye threw the ball up for grabs in the end zone and it looked as if another late mistake by the young quarterback would do in the Cleveland Browns. Instead, the defense held tough and the Browns rallied from 18 points down and won for the first time this season, 24-21 over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
Grounded Seahawks (Yahoo! Sports)Seattle's running game faces a major roadblock as RB Shaun Alexander is expected to miss at least two weeks.
Raiders work on getting to line of scrimmage quicker (AP)Speed is paramount in the NFL, a league where fractions of a second in the 40-yard dash can be the difference in millions of dollars in salary. Even though the Oakland Raiders have enough former track stars to put together an elite 400-meter relay team, they've spent their last few practices working on speed.
Saints breaking ground (Yahoo! Sports)The surprising thrashing of the Falcons on Monday night has catapulted the Saints into the rankings' top 12.
Ivy Leaguer earns start for Raiders on offensive line (AP)For a team whose offensive coordinator was running a bed and breakfast a year ago, it's only fitting that one of its starting offensive linemen majored in hotel administration at Cornell. It's Kevin Boothe's ability to hold off defenders, not run a hotel, that has earned him a likely starting spot for the Oakland Raiders on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
Walter has chance to validate Raiders' confidence in him (AP)The Oakland Raiders thought so highly of Andrew Walter even before he threw his first pass in a regular-season game that they decided against drafting quarterbacks Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler with their first-round pick in April. With Aaron Brooks sidelined for two to four weeks with a strained pectoral muscle, they will get an early sign whether their decision was correct.
Winslow clams up (AP)Kellen Winslow walked into the locker room, snaked through some TV cameras and kicked off his sneakers. Snatching a pair of headphones from a shelf, he left moments later listening to loud music. No interviews, thank you. Winslow was quiet on Wednesday, a welcomed calm for the struggling Browns. At least Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel fixed one thing.
Eagles' wings clipped (Yahoo! Sports)Having already lost CB Lito Sheppard for at least a month, the Eagles must now replace All-Pro DE Jevon Kearse.
All grown up (Yahoo! Sports)With their stingy D and improved offense, the Jags have matured into a team capable of playing deep into January.
Down for the count (Yahoo! Sports)Poor offensive line play and aggressive blitz packages have led to a high number of sacks through the first two weeks.
Brooks sidelined, Walter in for Raiders quarterback (AP)Aaron Brooks will be sidelined two to four weeks with a strained pectoral muscle, giving the Raiders' starting quarterback job to second-year player Andrew Walter. Brooks hurt himself Sunday after fumbling his second straight snap from center in the first quarter of a 28-6 loss to Baltimore. Originally, the Raiders thought it was a rotator cuff injury, but an MRI on Monday showed it was just a...
